Supplements for gut health

Gut health is the key to good health. I truly believe in that.

Trillions of bacteria are found in the gut. 70% of our immune system is in the digestive system. 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. Our gut digests food, helping us absorb and distribute nutrients throughout our body. The gut is also referred to as the ‘second brain’, as science now shows there is a clear link between the two… I can go on and on talking about the importance of taking care of the gut.

In this post, though, I want to discuss some supplements that can improve gut health. Let me dig deeper…

1) L-Glutamine

Glutamine is an essential amino acids, meaning our body cannot produce it and we need it from other sources like foods or supplements. Supplementing with glutamine can strengthen the wall of the gut. A strong gut lining makes sure nothing harmful can enter!

2) Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil comes from the peppermint plant. Enteric peppermint oil capsules can relieve the digestive system and aid with things such as abdominal bloating, gas and even pain.

3) Fish Oil

Studies are now showing supplementation with omega-3 fish oils can aid gut health. More so, it can help produce more of the good bacteria needed for a strong and healthy gut.

4) Pre-biotics

Pre-biotics act as fertilizer for probiotics. It’s basically food for the good bacteria to feed off of. So the more food (and good food this is) you provide to the bacteria, the more they’ll be able to grow and help create a healthier gut!

5) Pro-biotics

I highly encourage the supplementation of pro-biotics as it provides the good bacteria needed for a strong gut. Be wary when buying a supplement, though, as not all probiotics are created equal. Make sure of the dosage (CFUs) but also the number of bacterial strains. The higher the dosage and the more strains, the better!

6) Digestive Enzymes

Digestive enzymes may not be for everyone, especially if you have a good working digestive system. However, some people lack enzymes needed to breakdown difficult to digest proteins like gluten and sugars like lactose. Having said that, digestive enzymes can provide the gut with the enzymes needed to efficiently digest foods to then better absorb the nutrients, hence creating a stronger gut and healthier body.

While I always say ‘food first, supplements second’, sometimes we need to supplement with certain things to get our body up and running again. While these supplements are there to ‘supplement’ the body, don’t only rely on them fully. Make sure to also improve your eating habits by consuming clean, whole, and unprocessed foods while focusing on fruits, vegetables and whole grains to get the nutrients and pre/pro-biotics needed to improve and strengthen gut health!
