Tips for better gut health

Maintaining our gut health, or gut bacteria, is absolutely critical for the absorption of nutrients from the foods we eat. A poor gut function can lead to numerous issues such as a weak immune system, improper digestion of foods and the production of gases leading to stomach bloating and discomfort.

For a better health and well-being, consider improving your lifestyle and dietary habits that will enhance your gut function and create a healthy and sustainable gut environment.

Here are a few ways you can strengthen your gut to maximally absorb the nutrients out of the foods you eat and improve gut functioning.

1. Probiotics

One route to a healthier gut is to supplement with Probiotics. Probiotics are full of live bacteria and yeasts which supply our gut with ‘good’ bacteria. Essentially, this creates a healthy gut environment and improves our digestive system.

2. Eat Clean

Eat clean, unprocessed and fermented foods. Avoid any microwaved, shelved and canned foods which typically contain LOADS of sodium, preservatives and artificial flavoring. If you include such ingredients in your diet, you’re calling for trouble!

At the same time, consume fermented foods such as pickles, sourdough bread, yogurt and sauerkraut. I know some of these options don’t sound too appealing, but at least consider yogurt as it is a great source of probiotics!

3. Healthy Fats

Consume as much healthy fats as possible. This includes olive oil, avocados and nuts as well as omega-3s (flax seeds, walnuts, fish, and hemp seeds). Healthy fats can help moderate stomach inflammation.

4. Sleep

Focus on proper sleep quantity and quality. Sleep and other mechanisms of reducing stress (exercise and yoga, for example) can provide a sense of renewal and freshness to our body while controlling for gut inflammation.
